Roslyn Heights
Name: Roslyn Heights, D. A. R. House
Location: 821 Main Street
Built: 1895
Wilber T. and Rhonda Stephens Johnson built this lavish Queen Anne style house. Facing Main Street, it is known as the "last of the Main Street Mansions."
Construction started in 1894. The architects were Mathews and Sanders of Kansas City. It is three stories high -- not including the basement. The entire house was lighted by gas and electricity. Electricity was still new and gas served as a back-up. With twelve rooms, it was known as the finest house in the city, admired for its chandeliers and artistic design.
In 1983 this gorgeous house was purchased by the Missouri State Society, Daughters of American Revolution (D. A. R.). The house is open to the public for lunches, tours, and receptions. It also is open several days in December before Christmas and has an open house in the spring. Special tours can be scheduled.
