"Many Thousands Gone" - a Civil War Anniversary
Event
The Cooper County Historical Society will offer a stunning program Sunday March 13 at 2 PM on stage at the Laura Speed Elliot Auditorium entitled "Many Thousands Gone". A troupe of 14 performers from the Grace Hill AmeriCorps Rangers, will travel to Boonville with their original multimedia presentation of visuals, songs and stories for the general public as part of the Grace Hill's Civil War Sesquicentennial Community Anniversary. It is a must-see for all as a background for Civil War events in Boonville and Missouri. As the producer and advisor of the St. Louis public historian Angela da Silva has many theatrical credits to her name and has just recieved word that her prior historical re-enactment will be shown on CNN in April. For "Many Thousands Gone" Ms Da Silva researched the actual slave narrations recorded by the WPA in the 1930s for writing the authentic voices. Ms Da Silva has long familiarity with the Boonslick region. She operates the Black Tourism Network and through the Missouri Department of Tourism has conducted historical tours of this area from her home in St. Louis as well as teaching African American Studies in the American Studies department at Lindenwood University. All ages, particularly students, are encouraged to attend and enjoy "Many Thousands Gone" for a well-rounded view of slavery in antebellum pre-Civil War in Missouri which began in Boonville. There is no charge for admission -donations would be accepted to help defray travel expenses-but are not required. The Auditorium is located at 700 Main Street at Laura Speed Elliot Middle School in Boonville.
