| When school ends for the summer, so does lunch for thousands of children
living in poverty in central and northeast Missouri. In Cooper County
alone, 39% of the school-age children receive federally subsidized meals.
However this summer, help is on the way!
Thanks to a grant from the City of Boonville, a Kid's Cafe will be in
operation to provide a nutritious noon meal for low-income children. The
Central Missouri Food Bank in partnership with the University of Missouri
Extension Office will be running the feeding project. The food bank will
provide the food and the Extension Office, under the guidance of Art
Schneider, will be coordinating volunteers and sub-contract food
preparation through the Boonslick Senior Center.
If you are interested in reaching at-risk youth this
summer, please contact the Cooper County Extension Office at 882-5661 or
Peggy Kirkpatrick, executive director of the Central Missouri Food Bank,
at 1-800-764-3663 or 882-2682 (home). Feeding sites and volunteers are
needed.
