6th St.

This Queen Anne Cottage residence was built between
1885-1892. The irregular plan is
typical of this style. On the east
is a projecting ell which is chamfered and has sawtooth shingles and stickwork
detail. The entrance is in the
center section in a rectangular projecting bay.
It has double doors and a segmental transom.
An L-shaped porch extends from the chamfered bay to the circular bay.
There are several brick additions to the rear, the first one added in
1910. These give an elongated form
to the structure. Oral history relates that the house may have been built for
or by a Mr. Ames, a merchant who operated a store on the northeast corner of
Main and Spring during the 1890’s. The
original frame porch was remodeled to the present cement porch between 1905-10.
It was converted into 3 apartments in 1936.
According to the present owner, the dwelling was converted back to a one-family
home in 1985. Also, the carport has been removed.
On the alley to the west is a brick 1 ˝ story hip roofed structure,
“cowstable” built about 1892. The
west has 2 stall type openings. To
the south are wood folding garage doors and an open carport.
