517 Fourth Street

The structure was built in 1909-1910 as a residence for Maximilian E. Schmidt.  He married the daughter of Lt. Governor J. F. Gmelich and owner of the Gmelich Jewelry Store and entered the business in 1895.  It was converted to a funeral home in 1952.  It is of Box style and includes a Queen Anne arch on the east.  It has a one-story porch with a brick foundation and large frame ionic columns which extends to the south.  The south facade has a chimney with flanking lead glass windows and a polygonal one-story bay which has asbestos shingles.  On the north, there are 2 basement entrances under a slightly projecting rectangular bay.  This bay is used as a staircase and has a 3 part window at the one-and-one-half story level.  There is a concrete drive to the south, an asphalt shared drive to the north, and an asphalt parking area to the rear.  There is a concrete block, pent roofed outbuilding, with the garage on the north.
