510 Fourth Street

The original house built in
1892 was in a Second Empire style with a slate covered mansard roof.
However after a fire in 1921 the current Prairie type extended eave, tile
covered, hip roof was added. It has
a large hip dormer to the west. A
contemporary porch was also added. It
is two stories with brick columns, frame columns, and balustrade on the second
story. The roof and porch give a
blocky quality to the residence but do not really destroy the earlier effects.
There is a hip roofed one-story brick ell to the east.
It may be a later addition due to a change of brick texture. On the south
there is a one-story screened in porch. There
are hardwood floors throughout. The
present residence was built for George W. Sombart in 1930.
He was a prominent merchant who owned and operated the Boonville Laundry
and Ice Plant from 1912 - 1955. A
concrete drive runs along the south of the residence and connects the garage to
Fourth Street. A gravel drive
connects it to the east alley.
