Tips for Coping with Nausea and Vomiting
During Pregnancy
Although there are no known causes or cures for nausea and vomiting which occur during pregnancy, the tips below may give you some relief from the problem.
- Before you get out of bed in the morning, eat a few crackers, a handful of dry cereal or a piece of toast or dry bread.
- Get up slowly in the morning. Avoid sudden movements.
- Eat five or six small meals a day. Never go for long periods without food.
- Drink fluids, including soups, between meals rather than with meals.
- When you feel nauseated between meals, drink small amounts of apple or grape juice, or carbonated beverages.
- Avoid greasy and fried foods.
- Avoid spicy foods such as chili or Italian foods.
- When you cook, open windows or use a fan to get rid of odors. Even better, get someone to cook some meals for you.
- Be sure to have plenty of fresh air in the room when you sleep.
- Suck on hard candy such as lemon drops or peppermint between meals.
If you continue to have problems with nausea and vomiting or weight loss, contact your doctor, nurse or nutritionist.
