Important Tax Information for New Cooper County Residents

If you are a new resident to Cooper County, your first step is to contact the Cooper County Assessor’s office at 660-882-2646.  You need to let them know you are now living in this county; and if you have been a Missouri resident, you should also contact the assessor’s office in the county from which you moved.  You will still pay taxes in the county from which you moved if you were a resident there on January 1.  To obtain your license, you will present your paid tax bill from that county. If you are a new Missouri resident, you will need to get a non-assessment form from the Assessor’s office.

What kind of tax is collected at the County Collector’s office?

The Collector is responsible for the collection of the following:

Personal Property Tax.  This includes licensed motorized vehicles, boats, boat motors, trailers, mobile homes, livestock, some farm machinery, etc.  You must show a paid personal property receipt before the license bureau will allow you to license or re-license a vehicle anywhere in the State of Missouri.

Real Estate Tax.  This includes land and all permanently attached improvements.

How do I know if I owe either of these taxes?

         Personal Property Tax:

If you live in Cooper County on January 1 and own taxable personal property then you will owe tax for that year.  The tax payment is due by December 31, and the same procedure applies each year thereafter as long as you a Missouri resident.

         Real Estate Tax:

If you purchase real estate in Cooper County at any time during the year, then you will owe real estate tax for that year.  The tax payment is due by December 31 and again on the same date each year thereafter for as long as you own the real estate.

What generates a tax bill as a reminder for me to pay?

      Personal Property Tax:

YOU must report what taxable personal property you own directly to the Cooper County Assessor no later than March 1 yearly.  You should contact the Assessor’s Office when you move into the county to let them know you are now living here.  The assessment sheet you complete generates the tax bill which is mailed to the address you report on the form.

         Real Estate Tax:

The recording of your deed will automatically generate a tax bill.  However, when ownership changes occur after September 1, the tax bill for the first year will most likely be printed and mailed to the previous owner.  If this happens, it is your responsibility to obtain the tax bill information.  The Collector’s office will be happy to assist you if they are made aware of the misdirected bill.  Call 660-882-2584.

The Collector’s office is located in Room 27 on the second floor of the Cooper County Courthouse at 200 Main Street, Boonville, MO.
