Cooper County Detention Center has been in operation for the past five years.  There was a skeptical review regarding the need of a detention center.  When the center opened there were those who thought a 42-bed facility would be more than adequate, and would most likely never be completely full.  On the date February 22, 2005 there are 45 inmates in custody.  The transport officer was in route to pickup two more, giving us an inmate population of 47.  For the month of February there were 98 inmates booked.  Year to date there have been 213 booked.

The detention center has the good fortune of hosting it’s own kitchen with one full time cook.  All meals are prepared on site.  The cook works Monday through Friday.  He prepares the noon and evening meal.  Staff prepares the breakfast meal, along with all weekend and holiday meals.

The center is staffed by commissioned as well as, non commissioned officers.  There are three shifts, with a lead officer in charge.  Two of these shifts have sergeants in charge.  The day shift is currently without a sergeant.  The administrator has been assigned this duty until a replacement has been found.  Sheriff Milne has 12 full time officers working in the detention center.  Three of the twelve hold commission status.  One serves as a transport officer; when possible there are three assigned to a shift.  Unfortunately, most of the time there are only two on duty.

 The detention staff is hired by Sheriff Paul Milne, and answers directly to his command.  Second in command is Major Jerry Wolfe.  The current staff roster is as follows:

Sheriff Milne encourages and welcomes tours of the jail.  Request for a tour must be processed through the Sheriff’s Office.  Approval through Sheriff Milne, Major Wolfe, or Captain Allphin.
