REQUIREMENTS
Who must have?
Live in Missouri, age 16 or older, plan to drive.
A new resident of Missouri and plan to drive -- even if you have a driver's license from
another state.
Out-of-state commercial driver who has moved to Missouri within 30 days.
Who does not need?
Member of armed forces and have valid license from home state.
Full-time student and have valid license from home state.
If you plan to drive only farm machinery on a public street or highway for a short
distance
License expiration and renewal:
All Missouri drivers' licenses are valid for three (3) years.
If license expires you may not drive. If it expires, you must taken written and road tests
if you do not renew within six months (184 days) of the expiration.
Permits:
Restricted temporary instruction: Must be age 15 and 182 days old.
Restricted to driving when parent or guardian (who has valid driver's license) is in the
seat beside you. Good for six months and costs $1. May be renewed for six months.
Temporary instruction:
Must be age 16. Can drive when there is a licensed driver in the seat beside you. Good for
six months. Cost is $1. Renewal is $1.
Student instruction:
Must be age 15 and enrolled in high school driver training program taught by instructor
holding valid driver education endorsement or teaching certificate issued by Missouri
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Permit issued by driving teacher,
principal or head of the driver training program. Driving teacher keeps the permit. Good
when teacher rides beside you. Good for length of training program. Cost is $1.
