Graduating from Liberty High School, Sara Jo attended the University of Missouri in Columbia . In her early twenties, she moved to Washington, D.C. where she married, lived and worked for 25 years. She also attended Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria.

When Sara Jo's husband, Bob, retired from the Department of Defense in l994, the couple returned to Missouri to tend to her family business. They again settled in Liberty where Sara Jo served as associate marketing manager for a higher education consulting firm specializing in college and military recruitment.

Sara Jo has remained active in her community, serving as chair of the Clay County Democratic Committee for six years, as well as working on a number of boards and commissions. These have included the Clay, Platte, Ray Mental Health Board, the Clay County September 11th Memorial Ceremony committee, which she co-chaired, the Clay County Jail Expansion Committee, Clay County ACCESS 96 and a Clay County President's Day Celebration. Sara Jo also stays busy with her family, including four adult children and three grandchildren. The family still operates a farm in rural Missouri.
