CCBC is located in the old Sumner School, which was built in 1939.   It replaced the original black school located at 4th and Spruce Streets, which was organized in 1868.  In 1881, land was acquired and a building was built (The original school is now an apartment building).  Sumner School was used until desegregation in 1959.  After that the building was used as a warehouse by Guy's Potato Chip Company until it was purchased by the Concerned Citizens for Black Community (CCBC) in December 1986 for $25,000. Through a lot of cooperation and hard work, most of which was done by the men of CCBC who were former students, the Sumner that was once the center of the African-American community, is now a community center for all.

SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL SONG

(To the tune of "My Wild Irish Rose")

"My Dear Sumner High,
The dearest school I know
You may search everywhere
But there's none to compare
With My Dear Sumner High

My Dear Sumner High,
The dearest school that grows
And in all life's great test
I will e'er do my best
For the sake of My Dear Sumner High"
