South Howard County/Outdoor Arts Committee met November 30, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. in New Franklin at the South Howard County Historical Society.

Present: Those present were Art Schneider, Sue Thompson, Donna Cornelison, Marty Ferry, Doris Markland, Ray Glendening, Be Weston, Jacque Schaller, Dorothy Whitten, Janet Kroeckel, Janice Held, Tricia Cowan and Michael Goldschmidt.

The meeting was called to order by Sue Thompson, committee chairperson.  Minutes of the last meeting were submitted by Donna Cornelison and approved by the committee.  Kathy Southerland, treasurer, was absent, so no treasurer’s report was given.

Update: Michael Goldschmidt, associate professor of architectural studies, made a presentation on monument placement and configurations.  Using wooden cutouts he demonstrated various positions of the monument figures.  He preferred the individual figures as they were cut out.  The committee and Mr. Goldschmidt agreed that placement in a semi circle facing east would work best.  There was discussion about the fire that the figures would be placed around, it was felt that red granite logs with native stones placed around and uplighting through the logs would be very effective.  There was discussion about donor blocks or a donor wall in red granite, no decision was made.  Several options for the paved park area, including stamped concrete, paving stones and concrete pavers that look like brick were discussed, no decision was made.  He will do a new rendition for the City of New Franklin web page with the help of one of his students.  Art will check with artist, Harry Weber, on updating the current drawing.

Several suggestions were made for naming the monument, among those were Westward Vision, Westward Destiny, Westward Journey, Visioning the Future, Westward Embarkation,  The Past, the Present and the Future Katy Trail Park, Frontier Spirit, Spirit of Franklin and Franklin: Mother of the Santa Fe Trail.  Discussion was held and a vote was taken – Franklin: Mother of the Santa Fe Trail will be the name of the monument!

Donna gave an update on the New Franklin Christmas homes tour, everything is in place for December 11th event, there will a short meeting after this meeting to finalize plans.
