Boonslick Outdoor Arts Project
6 p.m. December 21, 2006
Emergency Preparedness Center meeting room
Present: Gary Nauman, Jim Painter and Art Schneider.
Art reported he had received e-mails and calls from members that they would be unable to attend because of holiday commitments.
City Donation: To date $634 has been collected toward the David Barton bust. In a separate account is $2603.99 left in funds raised through sales of posters, etc…
Consensus to ask the city to allocate $5,000 to $9,000 to ward purchase of the bronze bust in 2007. If sufficient private funds are not raised, no request would be made to access the funds. Jim Painter will represent the Outdoor Arts at January 2 public hearing.
David Barton School—Teacher Misty Langston and students will be conducting a fundraiser for the bust.
Traffic Signal Control Box---Gary Nauman noted Councilwoman Julie Thacher had shown him an article about traffic boxes being painted as an expression of the outdoor arts in Stamford, Connecticut.
There are two boxes that he is thinking about presenting for this. One is in front of UMB Bank and the other the box at Morgan Street Park. The park box is an eyesore and is out of place with the statuary. It also is in a location that interferes with the visual aesthetics of the park.
Gary suggested perhaps a contest in the schools to paint the traffic boxes. He noted there is nothing indicating the name of the park as Morgan Street Park.
Jim said he favored such a project providing that the art selected had an historic theme or motif and included the name Morgan Street Park. Consensus that this would be a way to integrate the traffic box into the park. Also concurrence to endorse with the Parks and Recreation Board.
Gary suggested he would talk to the board about budgeting $500 toward the painting of the traffic box. Consensus that if the cost exceeded $500 Outdoor Arts funds from the sale of posters, etc… would be used to pay the difference.
Also suggested there are professional artists who might like an opportunity to create an art motif from the box.
Meeting concluded at 6:45 p.m.
