Boonslick Outdoor Arts Project
October 20, 2005
Emergency Operations Center Meeting Room
Attending: Jim Painter, Gary Nauman, and Art Schneider. (Bob Dyer sent e-mail he could not attend and Maryellen McVicker had conflict with Friends of Historic Boonville board meeting the same night. Laura Gramlich is taking classes that will conclude at the end of December).
Update on Kwan Wu Proposal for F. T. Kemper bust. Art requested that the commission proposal for the bust be expanded to include the gray granite pedestal and that the Outdoor Arts be solely responsible for the donor and story plaque or plaques. Consensus to do so.
Conductor Statue: Edward Jones Co. Community section was contacted on a possible cost share for a conductor sculpture for the caboose at the Boonville depot. In communications with the company it was mentioned that Mrs. Jones would be contacted on this project. The company asked that it be recontacted to see what Mrs. Jones is willing to do. A member f the Cooper County Extension Council was a hunting partner of Mr. Jones and will be contacted to seek a meeting with her. Sculptor Harry Weber would be available to meet with her and a committee on a Wednesday afternoon. Discussion was having Gary, the mayor, Jim Painter from tourism and Art Schneider serve as the committee.
Kemper Bust donations: An e-mail and two phone calls have been received on whether any more donations will be accepted for the Kemper bust. Project members agreed to accept donations through December 31, 2005, and that the city would be requested to cost share the remaining amount. The city has paid up to $5000 toward the bust /pedestal project. Art said that the request would be much less than this for the Kemper bust.
Kemper bust dedication: The dedication is the last Saturday in June as part of Heritage Days. It will follow the Heritage Days Parade. Laura Gramlich said the alumni are actively working on speakers to be at the dedication.
Miniature Hannah Cole statues: Per discussion at the September meeting, Asiancrafts was contacted about sending a sample work in bronze style. The company agreed to do so for $200 and upon return of the sample statute would apply the $200 toward the order. Art noted there is an effort to form a for-profit company, BASHCo. (Boonville Area Souvenir and History Co.), to produce souvenirs for Boonville and it would be desirable to contract with it on this project. About 55 of the initial 100 shares have been pledged. However, the company’s first project would be the update and expanded publication of Boonville: An Illustrated History, by Bob Dyer. So it would be a while before additional souvenirs would e developed.
Also per the last meeting, prices were requested for fewer than 500 units of the Hannah Cole statue at eight and ten inch sizes. This adds considerably to the cost. For an eight-inch polyresin, the cost would range from $15 apiece per 100 to $3.80 apiece for 400. For the 10 inch the price would range from $18 apiece for 100 to $4.50 apiece for 400.
The project agreed to go ahead and use $200 from the sale of posters and plates to pay for a sample that could be applied later to the purchase order.
Next meeting: Project members will set a meeting date once the bronze polyresin sample is received so a decision can be made on a model.
Meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
