Boonslick Outdoor Arts Project
Cooper County Emergency Operations Center Meeting Room
May 24, 2004

Attending: Maryellen McVicker, Bettie Bowen, Carolyn Eichelberger, Dorothy Whitten, Jim Painter, Amalie Duvall, Gary Nauman, Art Schneider.

Toast-Bettie Bowen suggested after the statue is placed that a luncheon meeting be held June 1 at Taylor’s Bakery to celebrate completion of the Hannah Cole sculpture. (It later was switched to Bettie’s house-and what a treat!)

Financial Report--Maryellen McVicker said there is slightly more than $2400 left in the account the plus $500 yet pledged from the DAR. An additional $160 or so in plate sales is not included.

Artist Contract Draft-Art presented a draft of an artist contracted based on melding aspects of the contracts with Sabra Tull Meyer and Harry Weber for future outdoor arts contracts. The change to be made to the draft was from “three dimensional reproduction rights belong to the sculptor” to “three-dimensional reproduction rights shall first be offered to the sculptor.”

15-ace original Hannah Cole Fort site acquisition-Bob Dyer was not able to be present with rehearsal for an upcoming production. However, some members were at the city council meeting and the Historic Preservation Committee and the Parks & Recreation board both encouraged the city to acquire the site.

Marker for Lewis & Clark Trip---Dorothy reported that the DAR marker to recognize the Lewis & Clark expedition would be moved from 3 p.m. June 5 to June 19.

Morgan Street Park Remodeling-Gary reported that as we are meeting Boy Scout Troop 67 and Master Gardeners are putting flowers and mulch at the park. He is somewhat concerned about the condition of the sod.

Flowerbeds will be installed in front of the park’s circular walkway. He said that this year the beds would not be as deep as in future years.

Jim and Gary said that for the dedication plans are to have the podium to the left of the statue so as not to block the view. Twelve chairs will be needed for the dedication. Art offered 12 cushioned seats from the Extension Center. Gary said it would be best to be able to pick them up Friday, June 4, to have them ready for the June 6 dedication.

There is a 110-volt outlet behind the lights that is available for a P.A. system.

Art noted he received a call from Curtis Carter that the chamber had rented a P.A. system that is available. Jim will discuss the system with Curtis. Gary noted that the number of amps that the system pulls need to be considered.

It also is possible that the courthouse public address system can be used.

Hannah Cole dedication will need to be advertised

The parking area will be barricaded Sunday morning ad the street will be blocked from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A PortaPotty will be set up next to Copycat. A second one also will be nearby the park.

Asked about weather control, Gary will arrange for divine intervention to the best of his ability-at least for the two hours surrounding the dedication.

Cole Reunion -To assure that the Cole family descendants will be able to secure souvenirs, tables will be at the Cole Descendants’ Reunion. Art asked if two people could assist at LSE School. Amalie Duvall volunteered to be there at 10 a.m. Bettie also will be there.

At 10:30 a.m. the descendants’ brunch will begin. Gary said he would have two easels for signs. Art said his office would prepare the signs.

Dorothy said she would arrange to staff the Cole statue dedication for souvenir sales. She will be there at 2 p.m. and bring a card table. Art will arrange signs and bring the souvenirs to the dedication site. In addition, he will have dedication programs.

An addition will be a concert at 5 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Memorial Methodist Church by Bob “Piano Man” Long. He will not charge for the 50-minute performance, but a free will offering wills b asked. He will sell CDs after the performance.

Stamp Cancellation-Carolyn Eichelberger has arranged for Hannah Cole cancellations during regular Postal Service business hours June 4 and a special cancellation will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. June 5. The Postal Service also will be selling a Lewis & Clark coin package for $6.99, a Lewis & Clark booklet with stamps for $8.95 and a framed print of Lewis & Clark for $49.95.

List of events-The Boonville Area Chamber has printed a list of events and it also is available at Mo-River.Net by clicking on Lewis & Clark bicentennial and schedule.

Hannah Cole posters-The Hannah Cole posters are selling briskly. There were 250 printed. Pat Hannah designed the poster and the photography was by Helios. Cost is $10 ($15 total if S&H)

First Women Posters-The project ordered 110 posters with the intent of selling 100 and donating four. Mid-Missouri Printing printed 166 posters. All 166 posters have been signed and four have been backed with a foam backing so that the Cole descendants can sign them and no worry be given to the posters being damaged by ink oozing through or by pencil marks. Art has arranged with the police to put the thumbprints of those children too young to sign on the poster with a guardian writing the child’s name next to the print. Cost is $40. In addition to the 12 women signatures, there also are some signed by the sculptor and the poster designer, Bill Mathis.

School Posters--Bettie Bowen suggested that the schools each be given a poster. There was concern that the posters would not be protected or used and so no action was taken at this time.

Library Poster--It also was suggested that the library receive a print if it would display it. If so, the print is to be backed. Art will contact the library.

Sketches-Jim checked into the cost of framing the four sketches that helped the sculptor formulate a three-dimensional model. Jim said that a double matted framing with archival glass and acid free paper would cost $169 for each sketch. However, the business would cut the cost $51 for each sketch. The total would be $472 for the group. These would be presented to the city.

At this time, with the donor plaque and mounting stone not paid for, the group delayed a decision.

The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Next meeting will be at 6 p.m. July 8 at the Cooper County Emergency Operations Center Meeting Room.
